When you think Maine you may not think of museums. While the landscape of Maine has been a popular subject for generations of artists, the state is less known for art museums. The Maine Art Museum Trail is aiming to change that with a new web site, www.maineartmuseums.org.
The Maine Art Museum Trail is a partnership of seven premier museums, including Bates College Museum of Art, Bowdoin College Museum of Art, Colby College Museum of Art, Farnsworth Art Museum, Ogunquit Museum of American Art, Portland Museum of Art, and University of Maine Museum of Art. The Trail features an excellent collection of art from artists that summered in Maine. Additionally, museums like the Portland Museum of Art feature an impressive collection of European art, including an excellent collection of impressionist paintings.
Founded in 1997, The Trail was funded with support from the Davis Family Foundation, the Stephen and Tabitha King Foundation, and the Maine Arts Commission.
